The clients supplied a strong written brief along with a folder of photo’s showing their likes and dislikes. From this I developed a concept using a traditional Central Otago style cluster of buildings arranged into guest house, bedroom wing, and living areas. The entry and sixteen meter long gallery separate the south vehicle/entry courtyard, and a north entertainment/pool courtyard while linking the bedrooms to the living areas. The main open plan Kitchen, Dining Living area with its 3.6 meter stud, 1.5 meter open fire place, and exposed recycled timber trusses create a great room proportion which opens out to verandahs to the west and the north courtyard with spa pool and open fire to the east. Doors to the south open into a second sitting room and entertainment mezzanine with a large rear projection TV.
The clients loved the concept, and minimal changes were made to the drawings. Although initially designed as the client’s holiday house, they have enjoyed it so much that they have relocated and made it their main residence.
