ADNZ AWARD FOR BEST ROOF DESIGN

Sorted Architecture also claimed the 2009 ADNZ Otago/Southland Roof Design Award for work on a lakeside residence in Wanaka. The judges praised Steve Humpherson's "clever use of roof forms to allow the winter sun to penetrate deep into living areas that are situated to take advantage of south-facing views." TE ANAU AIRPORT NAMED TOP COMMERCIAL/INDUSTRIAL BUILDING IN 2008 ADNZ/RESENE NATIONAL DESIGN AWARDS

The 2008 ADNZ/Resene National Design Awards ended with a win for Wanaka practice Sorted Architecture.  Founding partner and architectural designer Steve Humpherson took the top accolade in the Commercial/Industrial Design category for the Te Anau Airport at Manapouri.

Inaugurated in April 2008 by Sir Tim Wallis, the Te Anau Airport at Manapouri was inspired by the aviation history of deer recovery in the region.  Combining tradition and modernity, its rural shed aesthetics were designed to enhance passengers’ travel experience by giving them a sense of the area’s heritage.

With a construction cost of $1.6 million, the terminal was also built to be as energy efficient and environmental-friendly as possible, boasting insulation well above code standards, high level opening windows for passive ventilation, Northern glazing for passive solar gain, corrugated clad water tanks to collect roof rainwater and locally sourced timbers and stone.

The ADNZ/Resene Awards judges commented that “The Te Anau Airport at Manapouri achieved a memorable and rewarding enhancement to the site, with a confident and elegant orchestration of vernacular materials and forms.”

Following his ADNZ/Resene National Design Awards win, Steve Humpherson of Sorted Architecture said: “It’s great for us to win the Commercial/Industrial Design Award because people might not know about this side of our work.  We’ve been mostly associated with residential projects, even though we’ve been designing commercial buildings for a long time.”

TE ANAU AIRPORT AT MANAPOURI

Combining tradition and modernity, the new airport building captures the essence of Southland by incorporating local materials and elements of the region's heritage and landscapes such as bridges.

Created as a collection of inter-linked autonomous spaces, the terminal now has the capacity to host three operators, with expected footfall of up to sixty passengers at a time.

Built with solar gain in mind, the building also features high level opening windows which allow for natural ventilation. Corrugated steel clad tanks collect roof rainwater to be used for irrigation.

Our growing design base of residential homes and commercial developments has necessitated a recruitment drive for technicians and we have found three of the very best. Rebecca Donnelly returned to Wanaka after completing the diploma in Architectural Draughting at the Otago Polytechnic, Mike Finlay decided while living in Whistler that Wanaka would be his home and moved here from Hamilton. Michael Daffern moved to Wanaka from Brighton England looking for the wonderful Wanaka lifestyle. He is an experienced architect and is our Senior Architectural Technician.

Chris has returned to New Zealand from a month in Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. In between admiring the scenery and (some of) the resort designs, he visited architectural masterpieces such as the Royal Palaces of Bangkok & Phnom Phem, and the ancient city of Angkor. Other highlights included the use of water features and rain water harvesting in both domestic and commercial buildings, and the traditional Thai house of former architect Jim Thomson with it's fantastic open plan living area that flows out to a tropical courtyard.

With the print shop moved into ground level premises (directly downstairs), Sorted Architecture now has a nice big space to play with. We are actively seeking generous product suppliers to help with our fitout.

Pearce Place (see Work in Progress) has now started on site, we cant wait to see the design in the flesh.

Processing of Building Consents by the local authority is taking anywhere between 1 and 3 months. This can make programming for contractors very difficult.
